Express Entry Program

Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) selects skilled immigrants for permanent residency based on their ability to settle in Canada and participate in its economy. Immigrants with skilled work experience can apply to immigrate to Canada through a system. It is called the Express Entry system.

Under federal programs for economic immigration, Express Entry manages the following applications for permanent residence

The Federal Skilled Worker Program

The minimum requirements for this program are

  • skilled work experience
  • language ability
  • education

To be eligible for the program, you must meet all the minimum requirements. When you meet all the minimum requirements, we’ll assess your application based on:

  • age
  • education
  • work experience
  • whether you have a valid job offer
  • English and/or French language skills
  • adaptability (how well you’re likely to settle here)

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, these factors are part of a 100-point grid. Depending on how well you do in each of the six factors, you will earn points.

The current pass mark is 67 points.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program

To qualify for this program, you must meet the required language levels for each of the four language abilities:

  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Listening
  • speaking

At least two years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade within the last five years

  • Work experience must have been earned (either by paying wages or earning commissions – volunteer do not count)

Meet the job requirements for that skilled trade, as specified in the National Occupational Classification, except for requiring a certificate of qualification; you must have

Job offer of full-time employment for at least 1 year, and a certificate of qualification issued by a Canadian province, territory or federal organization

The Canadian Experience Class

For each language ability, you must meet the language requirements for your job.

  • writing
  • reading
  • listening
  • speaking

Before you apply, you must have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada.

Your work experience has been gained while in temporary resident status in Canada with employment authorization

The provinces and territories may also recruit candidates from Express Entry as part of their Provincial Nominee Programs in order to meet their labour market requirements.
