LMIA - Work Permit

Employers in Canada may need to get a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) before they hire foreign workers.

A positive LMIA will indicate that there is a job opening for a foreign worker. It will also show that no Canadian or permanent resident is available for the job. Sometimes a positive LMIA is called a confirmation letter.

If the employer needs an LMIA, they must apply for one.

Once an employer gets the LMIA, the worker can apply for a work permit.

To apply for a work permit, a worker needs

  • A job offer letter
  • A contract
  • A copy of the LMIA, and
  • The LMIA number

The work permit that is issued through LMIA is Employer-specific work permits
